Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Foundation do?

The Bright Horizons Foundation for Children is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization focused on brightening the lives of children, youth, and families in crisis. The Foundation believes that we can make the world a better place by engaging Bright Horizons’ employees, clients, families, friends, and community partners, and their passion for meeting the needs of all children. We do this by creating and supporting comforting places for children in crisis to grow and play, strengthening their families, supporting our communities, sharing our knowledge, and encouraging others to join us in making a difference.

How is the Foundation related to Bright Horizons?

The Bright Horizons Foundation for Children was founded in 1999 to fulfill the mission of Bright Horizons Family Solutions to “make a difference in the lives of children and families.”  Through the Foundation, Bright Horizons supports nonprofit organizations with programs for children and families. The Bright Horizons Foundation for Children extended its ability to make a difference in the lives of children with the successful launch of our Foundation in Europe in August 2005.

At Bright Horizons, we have a wealth of knowledge about children and families. Through the Bright Horizons Foundation for Children, we can extend the reach of our knowledge and commitment far beyond the walls of our centers, schools, and programs for enrolled families to at-risk children and families in the communities where Bright Horizons Family Solutions employees live and work.

How is the Foundation funded?

We receive funding from many sources, including Bright Horizons and its corporate clients, parents, and employees. As a nonprofit organization, all donations are tax-deductible.

Bright Spaces

What is a Bright Space®?

It is a warm, enriching place in homeless shelters and community agencies where children, youth, and families in crisis can learn and play together. They are created and supported through partnerships with community agencies, financial sponsors, a Bright Horizons center, school or department and the Bright Horizons Foundation for Children.

I want to open a Bright Space.  How do I start?

Great!  We would be happy to discuss with you how to get a team together, the funding needed, and finding the right agency for you to work with.  Please contact Minnie Walker, our Bright Space Project Manager,  Minnie.walker@brighthorizons.com

I want to volunteer in a Bright Space, how do I find one?

For information on how to volunteer in a Bright Space, contact Julie Kelly at Julie.kelly@brighthorizons.com. She can assist you in locating an agency that needs volunteers.

Can we donate items to a shelter or a Bright Space through the Foundation?

The Foundation does not have the resources to manage donations of items.  We can provide you with a list of agencies and shelters that would like to accept donations. In most cases, the best practice is to identify a local agency and work directly with them.  Contact Julie Kelly at jullie.kelly@brighthorizons.com for assistance.

Grants and Community Champions

I am interested in applying for a Foundation grant. Is everyone eligible?

It depends on the type of grant. To receive a Gleason Grant, you must be a Bright Horizons employee who volunteers a minimum of 40 hours a year at a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization. A Founders Grant has to have a sponsoring letter from a Bright Horizons employee who is significantly involved with the agency.  In addition to other critieria, the Founder’s Grant is for organization that serves at-risk children 17 years and younger. Where do I find the grant applications?

Who can become a Community Champion?

Bright Horizons employees that volunteer their time with nonprofit organizations are eligible to be nominated by a Bright Horizons colleague to receive a Community Champions award. A plaque along with a letter of gratitude will be sent to the employee.
